How to choose your carpet?

Before choosing your carpet, it is important to determine its quality.

To do this, it all depends on how you will use it:

Will your carpet be intended for a bedroom, an office, a bathroom, a staircase or a hallway? The more the passage will be frequent and the traffic important, the more the carpet will have to be resistant.

To choose the right one, remember to check the usage characteristics of each carpet: domestic or professional, moderate, normal or heavy traffic. All this information is listed on the technical data sheets for each carpet.

Also check the backing (i.e. the backing that makes up the carpet). This can be foam or natural fibers. Generally, the thicker the structure of the carpet, the better it is.

The thickness and quality of the carpet also play a role in thermal and sound insulation. Thick carpets absorb noise better and protect against the cold. So many factors to consider before making your choice.

Of course, the higher the quality of the carpet, the bigger the budget. Don't hesitate to ask for a quote to avoid surprises at checkout, especially if you have a large area to cover.

Choose the material and appearance of the carpet

To choose the right carpet, it is important to take into account its material and its appearance.

Material
Two main categories of carpets are commercially available: synthetic carpets and natural carpets:

Synthetic carpets are usually made from polyamide and polypropylene. They are inexpensive (from around €8 per m2), resistant and easy to maintain.

Polyester carpets are a little more fragile and reserved for rooms such as bathrooms or bedrooms.

Natural carpets are made of wool and plant fibers such as sisal, seagrass or coconut. Warmth, robustness and insulation are among their strengths. They do not contain toxic substances and are not harmful to health. Their price is however higher (from around €12 per m2).

Appearance

Curly, pile, twisted, looped or even structured: the appearance of a carpet is important. It's a matter of decorative choice, but not only.

Loop carpets, for example, are perfectly suited to passageways such as hallways or stairs.

Velvet carpets are appreciated in living rooms or bedrooms for their comfort and softness.

What color for a carpet?

Today, carpet manufacturers offer wide ranges of colors to meet all your desires and adapt to your interior.

Before making your choice, first think about coordinating the color of your carpet with that of your walls and furniture. Important for a floor covering in perfect harmony with the room.

Also know that light colors enlarge the space and are therefore particularly suitable for small rooms. The dark colors are to be adopted in the large volumes and the vast surfaces to rebalance the space.

Also choose the color of your carpet according to its use. No to light colors (cream, pastel, etc.) in passageways such as entrances, hallways or children's rooms! Prefer darker and less messy colors.

Daily maintenance of a carpet

To maintain a healthy interior and optimize the life of your carpet, it is important to maintain it properly.

To do this, vacuum your carpet at least once a week to clean it and remove dust. Opt for a powerful vacuum cleaner (minimum 160 millibars) to dust it thoroughly.

In case of stains, use a special carpet product to spray directly on the dirt. Leave to act and dab with a white cloth

Every year, deep clean your carpet using an injector-extractor. You will easily find it for rent in the shops.

Finally, be aware that the carpet can be treated against dirt and stains (Scotchgard treatment, Imprel) or against dust mites thanks to an antibacterial treatment. So many tips that make everyday life easier and make it easy to maintain your carpet.

Well maintained, your carpet will last for nearly ten years before it needs to be changed.
