Red berries, lights and pine cones ... We stage the magic of winter in the garden or on the balcony, with a poetic decoration and frost -resistant plants ...

Un jardin de conte de fées pour les fêtes de fin d'année

Chinen the elements of the decor for an enchanted garden

A window edge, a large pot, a small table...Everything is a pretext for a festive and vegetable staging. We do not hesitate to accumulate plants and objects, with an overall coherence, limiting ourselves to two or three colors: frosted with zinc pots, white as snow with flowers and berries (Hellebores, Sympodine...), a classic red (holly, skimmia, gaulthérie...) or, why not, all green (with persistent leaves). An expedition to the garden, in the countryside or in the neighboring wood is essential.Officially, it is prohibited to pick plants in the wild. So, we just glean a few branches, dried fruits (pine cones, acorns), mousse (placed in an airtight box to keep freshness and humidity). We then go to the nurseryman or in garden center.Be careful, we do not get carried away for an exotic plant that will not bear to spend the holidays outside.Orchids, amaryllis, Poinsettias (nicely named Christmas stars but chilly), cactus...will stay in the house.Mini-cyclamens and first thoughts (Viola), if they are intended for the outside, will not necessarily have good looks in the festive decoration if it freezes. They will get back quickly to regain brightness in the redoux, but are likely not to be at the top on D -Day.

Vidéo du jour :

Foliage that lasts, flowers and top fruits

It's time for glory of persistent foliage. With the Christmas tree and the conifers family. With holly (Ilex), if you choose a self -fertile variety that manages on its own to form fruit, red at ‘Alaska’ or ‘Blue Princess’, yellow at ‘bacciflava’.The camellia, to be in the flower at Christmas, will be a camellia Sasanqua, because those of China and Japan are later.Protect it from air currents.Side small shrubs, the foliage of the Gaulthery (or Pernettya) blushes under the effect of the cold, enhanced with white or pink pearls depending on the varieties. The skimmia keeps red fruit all winter. We add variegated ivy, grasses (blue fetuque, blond care), heuchères (from gold to purple), cineraires (senecio) whose silver foliage gives a frosted effect. And why not gather pots of aromatics (sage, rosemary, thyme...) and to embed them (with LEDs who do not heat)? On the practical side, watch out for the wind that quickly took the decor. We lighten the pots with wet sand, which allows you to prick flowers and branches. We avoid the containers who risk splitting with the cold.We do not forget to water if winter is dry and windy.Conversely, in rainy weather, we check that there is no stagnant water, which rots the roots.

Install vegetable garlands or poetic threads

If the overloaded decor accompanies the generosity of the holidays, lightness brings poetry. Thus, feathered curtains, stretched threads where leaves and flowers hang, a large branch which deploys its bare branches...Everything is a pretext to accommodate the plant, around the window and from the front door. The sedums and overtime plants (Crassula) lend themselves to this little game, with their diversity of shapes, colors, and their good character. On a Mediterranean balcony, we have fun with eucalyptus leaves or olive branches, as with citrus fruits, which in this season scented flowers and colorful fruits. For plant garland, we do not skimp on the quantity of plants.A tip: we start from an artificial fir tree garland base (stunning result) that is wrapped around a metal structure (a deformed pressing hanger does the trick). Then just bite a few flowers, dried fruits, balls, stars...And the magic operates!Especially if we add a luminous garland suitable for the outside. And the guy?It is a parasitic species that feeds on the sap of its host plant.Impossible to cultivate it, but it is found in nature, on old apple trees, poplars...and on the markets. We do not deprive it, kissing underwear happiness!
