After twenty-two years of existence, the curtain falls on the Atelier theater

An important cultural page is turning in Poulx. The Atelier theater founded twenty-two years ago is closing its doors for good.

At the origin of this project, Jacques Servant has never let go of the bar. It was at the request of the parents of students at the Georges-Brassens school that this theater and pedagogy fanatic wanted, at the start, to offer basic training to amateur actors. But, quickly, the success encountered pushes the troupe to put on its first plays and the teacher also becomes a director and an actor when necessary. "I have always liked to transmit and share", confides the one who has spent his entire professional career in National Education. "Already, in 1958, as a teacher in a small Norman village, I applied a dynamic pedagogy and I continued once I became a history teacher, both in middle school, high school and university. was my motivation."

"The troupe will continue to exist differently"

Working at the Jules-Vallès college in Nîmes, the teacher acts as a theater animator, develops in the students the culture of texts written to be played, of their authors and of speaking out to better reveal them to themselves. In Poulx, he then set up the Compagnie des cintres and the first piece was performed in the pine forest one evening in June 2000. "It was Labiche's 'A Straw Hat from Italy', since then we have staged and played a dozen “, says Jacques Servant again. "We went to festivals, especially that of Falep, we played around and the Télémac in Nîmes welcomed each new creation." In total, thirty-two amateur actors learned, acted and experienced the thrill of the stage. But the adventure ends today. "I'm starting to get tired, at 84 the physical and psychological investment has become heavier, it's time to hang up. The confinements of the last two years have weighed, even if the troupe will continue to exist otherwise, I regret a little that 'there was no transmission here, in my village", he specifies a bit nostalgically. The only concern of this indefatigable associative activist is the evolution of a society that has become more individualistic, where volunteering and self-sacrifice in the service of others are gradually disappearing. Jacques Servant will be able to rest, live his passion for the theater as a spectator and let, with peace of mind, close the curtain on his beloved Atelier for the last time.
