who i really am

June 2020, a few days after the end of the lockdown decreed due to the coronavirus pandemic. We are sitting in the lobby of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. In front of us, the greatest Swiss sportswoman of all time, the one who for so long wanted nothing to do with the media. She looks at us, questions us.

It was not easy to get in touch with Martina Hingis. After many rejections over the years, she had finally agreed to talk to us. This first meeting was followed by many others, during which she told us about her life. For almost a year, we have often met and there, suddenly, the question arises:

“Actually, why did you want to spend so much time with me?”

Who I really am

“Why did you agree to participate?” we replied.

"Because I noticed that maybe once I could explain my side of things. Show me as I really am. I said to myself: the chance presents itself and I hope that it will be so.

She who usually speaks without periods or commas, who jokes and laughs constantly, gives herself a longer break.

“I just want people to finally show my real face. Not the arrogant bitch who refused to give interviews. No, I want to explain the Martina that I really am.

There followed what she repeated to us since then, until the last meeting shortly before the publication of this text: "My story is not a victim's story, it's the story of a success."
