Why are there still so many mosquitoes in this season and how to get rid of it?

They haunted your nights. With the "tiger", they also haunt your days ... at least until the end of October, even at the end of November.Who says global warming, says the extended mosquito season. Before, his presence was limited to summer. Now it rages until the beginning of winter where, for the moment, most of the 70 species present in France are in hibernation. And to make sure, in the summer of 2021 was well watered with a surplus of rain of around 25% on average. Now who says rain says more breeding areas for the mosquito.

There are basically two types of predators. The so -called classic mosquito, the "clex", or asshole. He enters into action around 3 a.m..It is not the light that attracts it but the carbon dioxide that you exhale. Also note that it is sensitive to the smell of perspiration, pheromones and perfume.Short .Around three in the morning, the female takes action. If it turns and turns around your head, it is that this is where we expel the most carbon dioxide.By stealing, it beats around 500 times per second and this friction is perceived by the human ear.But also by the male mosquito, which hears a signal for mating. The following ?It is the female that stings because she needs your blood to feed her eggs.

In addition to Culex, there is the tiger mosquito (because it is tiger) which has been established in mainland France since 2004.This species stings the day and worries because it is likely to transmit viruses such as dengue, chikungunya or zika.In January 2021, there were 64 French departments out of 96 infested by the tiger mosquito. If you see, do not hesitate to report it here.

So what to do to avoid being stung?

Home solutions

Delete stagnant waters. The first of the advice on the fight against mosquitoes is to scrupulously avoid leaving him available to the premises to happen again. This means that after each episode of rain or at least once a week, you have to track down the stagnant waters of your gardens, balconies, window edges and empty everything that can be used as a tank: cups, pots, tarpaulins etc.Do not leave anything dragged (tools, toys etc.), clean the gutters, maintain the garden well (regularly collect plant waste) and cover tightly or using all water reserves, recuperators, vats, looks etc.

Air currents, low temperatures, filter curtains. An effective weapon against the mosquito and little known: the fan!Yes, the mosquito is not good at flying to Contrevent. So, a fan placed in front of the window or around you just prevents it from approaching you. Also know that the mosquito does not like cold. The solution is hardly "eco friendly" but if you chain the nights of insomnia and you support the cold, you can go down the air conditioning under 18 degrees to dissuade it.

Of course, there is also the traditional mosquito net to arrange in front of the windows or to hang above the bed.Or for even more efficiency, anti-mosquito curtains. The Montpellier Development Research Institute (IRD) has developed a deadly active ingredient for the insect, incorporated directly on the wire during its manufacture. This product is an effective 100%insecticide, harmless for humans but formidable for mosquito, even tiger, and in accordance with WHO standards."The mosquito will come into contact with the curtain when he will want to cross or go bitch his prey and by dint of contact, he is killed or he undergoes a knockdown effect which prevents him from stinging," told Franceinfo the director ofLinder, a family business specializing in weaving for a century. The fabric resists UV and remains effective for three years or up to six washes.

Pourquoi y a-t-il toujours autant de moustiques en cette saison et comment s'en débarrasser ?

Insecticides, repellents, essential oils and other commercial products.According to the consumer association Que Choisir, the most effective weapon indoors against the mosquito remains the aerosol or spray bomb containing an insecticide made from Pyrethrinoids (all the names that end in "thrrine", transfluthrine, tetramethrin ...).Problem, they are toxic. To limit their harmfulness, the magazine advises to use them in moderation. The usefulness of electric diffusers that plug into a power outlet is more random, depending on what to choose. It all depends on their composition, even if they often use Pyrethrinoids. In addition, the latter distributing permanently, we breathe the insecticide continuously.

Repeulsive in the form of spray, cream or gel that is applied to the skin, can also prove to be precious allies, especially those based on Deet (N, N-Dietthyl-3-Méthylbenzamide) offering a concentration25 or 30%.They are particularly recommended in areas at risk of transmission of malaria, dengue or other gender disease.Que Choisir also recognizes "correct" efficiency of icaridine repellents. On the other hand, only citriDiol (which can also be found under the name of PMD or essential oil of lemony eucalyptus) can push the mosquito, according to the consumer association.Other essential oils do not protect.

Outside, still according to what to choose, the smoke serpentines have proven themselves but are toxic. On the other hand, essential oils or other lemongrass candle have no repulsive effect on a female eager for blood. And ultimate disappointment for followers of natural solutions, this is also the case with supposed repulsive plants such as geranium, lemongrass, thyme, basil, lavender and verbena.

Among the false good solutions, what to choose also pinning ultrasound devices, ultraviolet lamps, anti-mosquito bracelets and famous "homemade" yeast traps whose recipe is frequently shared on social networks.Worse than in fact they attract wasps! The magazine also has electric snowshoes. If indeed, they grill the mosquito in full flight, it is still necessary to be particularly skilful to intercept it.As a reminder, the predator measures around 5 mm.

On the other hand, but it is more ambitious, you can also get started like in the Haut-Rhin in swallows farming.Symbol of the return of spring, the bird can especially ingest up to 3,000 insects per day on average. In the genre, there is also the bat that can devour up to 600 flying insects per hour. But hunting only at nightfall, it is not very dangerous for the tiger mosquito.

Communities solutions

Night hunting with a tiger mosquito. Some municipalities take advantage of the night when the tiger mosquito is inactive to operate large -scale insecticide treatment in the sectors where it has been spotted. It is a question "to eliminate the greatest number of larvae and adults of tiger mosquitoes and to delay its implantation permanently", explained the ARS Bretagne. An operation was carried out for example, in Domagné in Ille-et-Vilaine, on August 26 and 27.

The Vectrap system.Developed by researchers of the Interdepartmental Agreement for Demoustication (EID), this mass trap targets the problem at its source: reproduction: reproduction. The EID has installed 400 traps free of charge in three Hérault-Test municipalities, Clampiers, Castelnau-le-Lez and Saint-Clément-de-Rivière.Started in July, the experiment is planned to last three years. After the three summer months, the device will be withdrawn and then reinstalled the year after.

An ecological anti-mosquito bound and made in France. It was invented by two young Arlesians and seduced worldwide.Called Qista, this terminal kills almost 90% of mosquitoes within a radius of 60 meters without the slightest insecticide.Connected to its sisters, it also collects data to better combat the invasion of the Tiger mosquito. The terminal makes it possible to disperse recycled carbon dioxide to imitate human breathing and an olfactory lure to simulate the body smell, in fact lactic acid. The device attracts the female mosquito which, once nearby, is sucked in in a trap which it cannot come out.Other insects are not sensitive to trap.Qista is already installed in more than 50 communities in the south of France, notably in Hyères (Var) which has grown its town with more than 350 terminals.Tests are also carried out in Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal.

Medium or long -term solutions

Large is the temptation to eradicate purely and simply the harmful: vector of diseases, he is considered responsible for the death of some 800,000 people each year (the shark kills 6).But the scientific community remains divided on the question. The mosquito is indeed the favorite meal of certain species of birds, amphibians, reptiles or fish that feed larvae. And then, we know it less, but the mosquito also plays the role of pollinator, like bees.A role however deemed insufficient in terms of his nuisance, by certain researchers.Consensus remains for the time being to limit its proliferation.Scientists therefore work on the mosquito itself to avoid the massive use of insecticides.

In New Caledonia, Australia or lately in Indonesia, we release mosquitoes with the Wolbachia bacteria. This reduces the capacity of bearers to transmit diseases such as dengue, zika or chikungunya. The project is carried by the World Mosquito Program.

Brazil, the Cayman Islands, Malaysia or more recently Florida (United States) are trying massive sterilization by spreading genetically modified mosquitoes, known as "GMO mosquitoes".Males can mate and even reproduce, but the genetic modification of which they carry the destruction of the larvae. They therefore have no descendants in the end.The method is however contested by environmentalists, worried in particular of the risks of contamination of flora and fauna.

Also seduced by the prospect of stopping reproduction, the meeting has been experimenting since May a release of mosquitoes sterilized by irradiation. They are widespread by thousands thanks to drones. The method is controlled and has already proven itself to combat the proliferation of certain flies of flies.Main advantage: it seems to have no impact on the environment.
