You may have decided that an area of your home needs some lighting - it could be the living room, the hallway, maybe even a bedroom - but you don't want to put any unsightly holes in it. your wall because of the use of nails. Fortunately, there are a number of alternative ways to hang or display string lights.

1. Thumbtacks

Probably the default option for many people, thumbtacks (we find brass thumbtacks are often the best) can be pushed between the twisted wires that often make up string lights, as shown in the image below. This will leave a small hole in your designated surface, but nothing compared to that which would be created by a nail.

A flat-bottomed bronze pin would be best, but any pin can be pushed between the intertwined wires that make up most string lights.

2. Blu-Tack

If you want to leave no marks on your walls, using blu-tack is an alternative. The wire or the back of the LED itself will need to be pushed into the blu-tack at various intervals. This will work for many small string lights, maybe 5m or less, but may not work as well for heavier string lights, unless you plan to use a large amount of blu-tack!

For smaller sets of lights, Blu-tack will be ideal to ensure they hook together easily.

3. Wrap household items

Due to the flexible nature of string lights, you often won't need any additional accessories to hold them in place, just a little imagination! Try wrapping them around pre-made "lighting" areas that you don't need. You might not have thought of; areas such as bookshelves, desks, headboards and picture frames. You'd be amazed at how many areas of your home are a potential home for string lights.

For hanging and draping around household items, decorative light fixtures are great for creating a cozy atmosphere.

4. Thread suckers

Often used with Christmas decorations when strewn across windows, suction cups are not limited to Christmas time. Fixing lights above windows can be fantastic in children's rooms and provide a truly warm and relaxing at night. The suction cup is pressed to the window and has a hook or other mechanism through which a wire can be gripped.

For any lights meant to be on a window, suction cups are perfect for holding them firmly in place.

5. Adhesive hooks without damage

These hooks can simply be stuck to a surface using the attached adhesive pad, before hanging your lights. They are designed so that no sticky residue or markings remain on your surfaces, and there are different types to suit your needs specific. Most generally advise waiting at least an hour after gluing before hanging the lights.

Sticky hooks are ideal for hanging short and longer sets (over 5m) of lights.
