How to Measure the Length, Width or Sizes of a Curtain | Spiffy Coils

Eyelet Curtains

Length: For grommet curtains, measure from the *top* of your curtain rod to the desired end. Then add 1.5 inches to this measurement. This should be the final length provided to us in the product specifications. your custom order. The extra 1.5 inches added at the end should account for the "raise" of grommet curtains - the part of the fabric that sits above the curtain rod. These steps will help you achieve the measurement perfect for curtain lengths.

Spiffy Tip: "Fraction of Length" in our curtain order pages refers to measurements "in partial inches". For example, if you want to order curtains 86.50 inches long, please choose "86" under the specification “Length” and “1/2″ (0.50 inch)” in the “Length Fraction” drop-down list.

Width: Although width is a personal preference to some extent, our general guideline for grommet curtains is to order panels that are twice the width of your curtain rod/track. curtains are 36 inches wide, we suggest two 36 inch panels *each*, not two 18 inch panels each. This will give you a luxurious drop/gather. If your curtain rod is 36 inches wide and you order curtain panels that are also 36 inches wide in total, they will hang flat with no wrinkles or gathers.

For a high level of fullness, order up to three times the post width. If you are looking for below average fullness and/or to save on your budget, 1.5 times should also be acceptable.

Up to three times the width is also highly recommended for sheers and lightweight fabrics such as our sheets. These fabrics have less body bulk and therefore need more width to achieve the same full look as fabrics such as cotton and polyesters. More width also helps to improve privacy where sheers are used

Tab, Tab Back and Rod Pocket Curtains

Length: For Rod Pocket Top (without ruffle), Back Tab Top and Tab Top Style Drapes, measure the length from the *top* of your curtain rod to your desired end point. should be the final length provided to us in your custom order specifications.

Width: Although width is a personal preference to some degree, our general guideline for tab, tab back and rod pocket curtains is to order panels that are twice the width of your rod/track to curtains. For example, if your curtain rod is 36 inches wide, we suggest two panels of 36 inches *each*, not two panels of 18 inches each. This will give you a rich fall/gather. If your curtain rod measures 36 inches wide and you order curtain panels that are also 36 inches wide in total, they will hang flat with no wrinkles or gathers.

If you are looking for below average fullness and/or to save on your budget, 1.5 times should also be acceptable.

Although we recommend 3x fullness for an opulent look in rod pocket style, we do not recommend more than 2x fullness for placket tops and back placket tops as plackets somewhat restrict fabric "bundling" in high and therefore the panels don't come together as well with too much width.

Rod pocket style with header top

Length: For rod pocket tops with a frill, measure the length from the *top* of your curtain rod to your desired end point. Add 1.5 inches to this number to account for a frill. 1.5 inch header on top. This should be the final length provided to us in your custom order specifications.

Flat Panel Top Curtains

Length: The flat panel drapery is hung using drapery pins inserted into the header tape at the back or using drapery clips pinched at the top hem.

For flat panels to be mounted with a drapery pin and hook mechanism on a track, the length should be measured from the top of the track to the desired end. This will allow the length to cover and hide the track itself. If you want your track to be visible, measure from the bottom of the track to the desired end point. If hanging from a pole, the length should be measured from the underside/bottom of the pole .

For panels hanging with curtain clips, measure the length from the *bottom* of the curtain clip to your desired end point. This should be the final length provided to us in your custom order specifications.

In summary, to some extent the final drapery length for a flat panel top is determined by personal preference. Customers measure lengths based on whether they want their hardware visible or hidden by the fabric.

The header tape we sew to the back of the flat panels is 4 inches wide. It allows drapery pins to be inserted at three different points, giving customers some flexibility to adjust the final mounting position at the time of installation.

Width: Most customers who order darted tops tend to favor a slightly flatter look for their drapery with less puckering/fullness than average. Therefore, by default, most customers order panels that are 1.5 times the width of their curtain rod/pole. For example, for a 36 inch wide curtain rod/window, two 27 inch panels *each* would give less than average fullness while still giving a beautiful appearance specific to this style.

That said, we recommend ordering twice the width of the post (two 36-inch panels *each* for a 36-inch post for example) if you want a good level of standard puckering. And up to three times (two 54 inch panels *each* for a 36 inch mast for example) for a plush look.

We also recommend a relatively wider width (2-3 times the pole width) if you are ordering sheers or lightweight fabrics such as our sheets. These fabrics have low body volume and therefore need more panel width to get the same full frown and improve privacy.

Be careful to *not* order two panels of 18 inches each for a 36 inch pole for example. With these specs, the curtains hang flat like a sheet with no wrinkles or puckers.

Pencil pleat curtains

Length: Pencil pleat curtains can be hung from a rail or pole with a drapery pin and hook mechanism. If hung from a track, the length should be measured from the top of the track to the desired end point. This will allow the fabric to cover/hide the track itself. If you want your track to be visible, measure from the bottom of the track to the end point.

If you are hanging your pencil pleat curtains from a pole, the length should be measured from the underside/bottom of the pole. Or where you would ideally want the top edge of the panel to sit.

A wider width also helps to improve privacy where sheers are used.

Tie Top Curtains

Length: Our tie back curtains are sewn with 10 inch long ties across the top. The length specifications for this style are somewhat determined by how much of the top tie loop you wish to appear and hang under the pole/ the rod.So the length of the curtain panel should be measured from the point where you want the panel drop to start to the desired end point.

Pinch pleat curtains: all styles

Length: All pinch pleat styles offered can be hung from a rail or pole with a drapery pin and hook mechanism. If hanging from a track, the length should be measured from the top of the track to ' at the desired end point. This will allow the fabric to cover/hide the track itself. If you want your track to be visible, measure from the bottom of the track to the end point.

If you are hanging your pinch pleat curtains from a pole, the length should be measured from the underside/bottom of the pole. Or where you would ideally want the top edge of the panel to sit.

In summary, to some degree the exact final length of pinch pleat drapery is determined by personal preference - whether you want your hardware to be visible or not, and where you want the top edge of the drapery panel to be. sit/begin .

Spiffy Tip: "Fraction of Length" in our curtain order pages refers to "partial inch" measurements. For example, if you want to order curtains 86.50 inches long, please choose "86" under specification “Length” and “1/2″ (0.50 inch)” in the “Length Fraction” drop-down list.

Width: Measure the width of your curtain rod/track. Add 7-10 inches to this measurement. This should be the final width of your panels *in total* per pair. 70 inches, we recommend a total panel width of 77-80 inches. Then depending on whether you are looking for a single wide panel or a pair, you can either order one panel approximately 80 inches wide or two panels of 40 inches each .

Since these are "fixed" headers (the pleats are pre-sewn into the panels by hand, at a fixed width that cannot be loosened), it is important to accurately measure the track/pole width when ordering one of the pinch pleat styles .This will allow us to gather your curtains to the correct width.
