Be your own designer with the Start-up of MYCS modular furniture

Since 2014, Mycs wishes to make personalization the new way of designing an interior.Putting the design of furniture in the hands of customers and allowing an affordable modular, such is the mission of the Berlin brand.Interview with Christoph Jung, founder and managing director.

How would you present your business?

I would say that Mycs is a fast-growing start-up, an online furniture electronic commercial brand. With our 250 employees and from our head office in Berlin, we sell in France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.Concretely, we offer the possibility to everyone to create their own modular furniture, customizable, with little effort: personalized solutions for anyone wishing to design an interior that corresponds to them. Our vision of design is above all individual, and we think that furniture must adapt to our tastes as to our needs.

To give our customers freedom to decide on the appearance of their furniture themselves (size, materials, colors, textiles, etc.), we have developed a 3D online configurator, very intuitive, which allowsget a realistic and clear idea of the product even before its manufacture. Our collection is made up of a wide range of products: tables, buffets, dressing rooms, shelves, armchairs, chairs and sofas ... The whole apartment can benefit from our expertise. We have chosen to develop products with sleek design, of modern Scandinavian inspiration, and make sure they are of very high quality, made in the European Union.

What was your business starting point?

From the start, we wanted to change the way people consider the design of furniture. My first furniture manufacturing company, launched in 2010, was somehow the precursor of what mycs are today. Thanks to this experience, I was able to confront specific challenges related to the manufacture and delivery of tailor -made furniture, namely the costs and availability of the supply chain. We quickly saw that there was a need to simplify our service of the time, and found the solution: a modular service, a choice of styles and colors more refined, and especially of the parts available in warehouse, ready to the'Assembly, for any order closest to the customer's wishes. Thus, we want to democratize the personalization process, to make it an affordable luxury.

Who are your customers, and what services do you offer them?

We work mainly in BtoC, but our expertise and our commitment to the quality of materials also allows us to collaborate with designers for the development of office spaces, restaurants or hotels.

We first offer a personalization experience. You can design the furniture that meets your needs on our site, by mastering all the adjustments of its appearance thanks to our photorealist technology. Our modules compatible with each other can truly develop your furniture to a unique room.

We deliver free of charge to France and Belgium, and it is possible for our customers to benefit from an optional assembly service, for even more simplicity. Finally, an interior design service is offered in our showrooms, with interior architects available to advise and guide tailor-made projects. From A to Z, your project is unique and to your liking: we are for a simple design and a service that is just as much.

Tell us about the innovative aspect of your business.

We approach the market with a very complete modular catalog and combine it with a technology allowing to visualize a photorealistic form of your product, that is to say that changes shape in real time. The 360 ° function allows you to see the furniture from all angles to refine your creation. No prefabricated photo or video game design: you see your furniture as it is at home.It is a guarantee of confidence that has great value for us.We worked with Ndivia from the start, to develop our own rendering engine and have been able to offer a view of the product without delay, an attractive and fun process for the customer.

Another important point in terms of innovation is our desire not to compromise on costs. Our prices are competitive, thanks to the control of storage and the guarantee of high quality services: by ordering large volumes to our suppliers, we benefit from preferential prices and we repercuss the savings made on our customers. The development of the brand has made us rigorously consider each aspect of the process, from design to optimization of the supply chain to delivery: we have a dedicated assembly team, and are able to manageThe process of A to Z.Finally, you get the best of both worlds: a good price for quality creation.

What challenges have you recently noted?

In March 2020, with the market shock, sales fell: we experienced a month of crisis, then we had to quickly face higher demand (an increase in office sales, chairs and shelves) and in the sametime to problems throughout the supply chain.Customer service has been challenged by this situation, we have experienced delays and vagaries, but we quickly got back on foot. This crisis has notably given us the opportunity to take measures and adjust our communication with customers, informed in advance of any problem and supported throughout the process.

What prospects for the future do you want to share?

My biggest passion?Develop new products;Between my studies in mechanical engineering and trade, I am truly passionate about the opportunities available to us.Personally, I use most of our products, as a model of dressing room that I could personalize, allowing me to adjust my organizational needs. It’s true that it changes your life!

Last week, we launched a new sofa model called Flayr. It is the most customizable sofa on the market with different heights and depths, sleeping and storage features and a large catalog of textiles. We are currently developing new styles, perfect for expanding the French market. In 2020, our turnover reached 40 million euros, and we have the potential to develop even more.We are a growing business, with complex but funny challenges: in my opinion, these are good problems to have!
